Vital records

Birth registrations, along with marriage and death registrations are referred to as vital records.

In Ireland registration of non-Catholic Marriages began 1 April 1845 (Murphy, 2013), however a full system of registration was not introduced until 1864, (Grenham, 2012).

 

Birth registrations provide the following information;

  • Date and place of birth

  • The name

  • Sex

  • Name, surname and dwelling-place of the father

  • The name, surname, maiden name  and dwelling-place of the mother

  • The rank profession or occupation of the father.

 

Marriage registrations document the following information;

  • The date of the marriage

  • The names and surnames of both parties to the marriage

  • Their age

  • Their condition

  • Their rank, profession or occupation

  • Their residence at the time of the marriage

  • The name and surname of the father of both parties

  • The rank, profession or occupation of both fathers.

 

Death Registrations provide the following information relating to the deceased;

  • The date and place of death

  • The name and surname

  • The sex

  • The condition as to marriage

  • The age as at last birthday

  • The rank, profession or occupation

  • The certified cause of death and the duration of the final illness.
