The Moore Family of Clones
Tithe Applotment Books
Tithe's were taxes due to the Established Church, the Church of Ireland. Originally the tax – of one tenth of production – was paid by the farmer in produce, however the Tithe Composition Act (1823) specified that Tithes should be paid in money. As such the taxable land in each parish was surveyed, giving the names of the occupiers of land in each townland, the acreage and class of land they held, and the amount of taxes (tithes) they were liable for. This survey was done between 1823 and 1837. The Tithe Applotment books do not provide a full listing of population but only the names of heads of family of occupiers of agricultural holdings over one acre.
