Census of Ireland Records

Census were taken of the whole island of Ireland in the years 1821, 1831 ,1841, 1851, 1861, 1871, 1881, 1891, 1901 and 1911.However only the census returns for the years 1901 and 1911 survive in full, as those for the years 1821, 1831, 1841 and 1851 were destroyed in the main by a fire in the Public Record Office in Dublin in 1922, whilst those for 1861, 1871, 1881 and 1891 were destroyed by the order of the goverment prior to 1922.

The census returns for the years 1901 and 1911 are arranged by town land, which is the smallest division of land or, in urban areas, by street.  The following information is contained in the 1901 census , for every member of each household; name, age, sex, relationship to head of the household, religion, occupation, marital status and county or country of birth.  The census also records an individual’s ability to read or write and ability to speak the Irish language.

The 1911 census contains the same information along with the following additions; married women were required to state the number of years they had been married, the number of their children born alive and the number still living.

B1 form House and Building Return of the census gives details of the houses and buildings in a town land/street, including what kind of building (private dwelling, factory, shop etc.), what class of building, number of families living in each house, number of people living in how many rooms, and the name of head of household. While B2 form Return of Out-Offices and Farm-Steadings provides information about the extra buildings which were attached to a dwelling, such as stables, coach houses, cow houses, dairies, piggeries, barns.

N form is the Enumerator’s abstract and here details are given of the number of houses in a street or town land, and the number of occupants of each house, broken down by sex and the religious denominations present in each household (National Archives – About the 1901 and 1911 Censuses).
