Census Substitutes

Census substitutes are records that, like censuses, provide lists of individuals living in a specific area, however in most cases they do not give a full listing of population. Census substitutes are particularly valuable in Irish family research due to the destruction of so many records, and can be useful for pinpointing a specific townland for an ancestor. Some important examples of census substitutes include Griffiths Vaulations, and Cancellation Books, Tithe Applotment Books and Pension search forms.
